What to check

Review the Date of First Delinquency in context, not by itself.

Start by locating the same account across Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Then compare the delinquency timing against the open date, payment history, account status, charge-off timing, collection reporting, and any removal timing shown on the reports.

FieldReview question
Date of First DelinquencyIs it shown, and does it match the account timeline?
Payment historyDoes the monthly history support the delinquency timing being reported?
Collection or debt buyer datesDo later dates make an older problem look newer than expected?
Removal timingIf a removal month or year appears, does it fit the rest of the record?

Why it matters

Delinquency timing helps explain the life of the account.

Consumers often focus on the balance first, but the timeline can be just as important. If the delinquency timing is missing or does not fit the surrounding report details, that can make the account harder to understand and harder for a consumer to verify.

This does not mean every account with a confusing Date of First Delinquency must be removed. It does mean the account may deserve a more focused review and a more specific dispute letter.

Dispute letter focus

How a dispute letter can address delinquency timing.

A stronger dispute should identify the account, identify the bureau, and explain what looks incomplete or inconsistent about the delinquency timeline. The point is not to make a dramatic claim. The point is to ask for a clear investigation into whether the reporting is accurate, complete, and verifiable.

  • Identify the account and bureau reporting the questionable timeline.
  • Point to the missing or inconsistent delinquency field.
  • Reference related fields that do not line up, such as payment history, status, or collection dates.
  • Request correction or deletion of information that cannot be verified as accurate and complete.
